Clive Davis declared Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson to sing a few songs and then told the audience that Hudson would probably be enjoying Aretha Franklin in an upcoming biopic about the life of Queen of Soul. Hudson was actually hand picked by Franklin to perform the role.
It was acceptable that Davis introduce this all, since he has such a long professional relationship with Franklin. The celebration started with performances by Barry Manilow, Luis Fonsi, Ben Platt, Alicia Keys, Khalid, and Logic. Hudson was the last singer to perform. Hudson staged Franklin classics Think, and Respect as part of her performance.
There were rumors about a Franklin movie that MGM is currently getting and will fund. Franklin's musical heritage spans six years, from the first recording as a young gospel singer, to her latest release, A Brand New Me: Aretha Franklin with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. She's scored countless strikes, including the reinvention of Otis Redding's Respect as a feminist anthem that changed her into an icon of the civil rights and women's movements. She is one of the most honored artists in Grammy Award history and is in all major hall of fame awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Scott Bernstein will be producing the film and will be helped with Straight Outta Compton's music director Harvey Mason Jr., who's worked with Franklin and also produced songs for the movie Dreamgirls, which Hudson had grabbed an Academy Award for playing a supporting role, together with Beyonce. Hudson has gone on to a powerful career that included the premiere of Dragon, which premiered in Sundance.
